Impeachment crucial to Senate bets
There is no doubt that the timing of the impeachment trial for Vice President Sara Duterte is crucial to the candidacies of both the incumbent senators and the wannabes. This is the obvious reason why no less than Senate President Chiz Escudero is proposing (insisting?) that the trial be held after the state of the nation address (SONA) of President Marcos Jr, a time where the winning senators have already sworn in to office. Escudero’s scheme of the start of the impeachment trial is meant to avoid taking the votes of the senators hostaged by the pro- and anti-Duterte supporters. Should the impeachment trial and subsequently the voting of guilt or acquittal of VP Sara by the senator-judges be done before the May 12 mid-term elections, it will always be influenced by the supporters or non-suporters political leanings. But the fact also remains that whatever will the result of the impeachment trial be, it will always be swayed by political forces since impeachment is a political exercise, whose final outcome is in the hands of the politician-judges. Let’s all closely watch what will develop in the coming weeks, or in the duration after the voting day takes place!
